shock collar in modern dog training, what are the horrible side effects?
Просмотров 40 тыс.5 лет назад
Is Electric shock ever appropriate in dog training or behavior modification? Some say one shock can lead to a lifetime of horror. Do shock collars have any place in modern training and can we stop dangerous behaviors to oneself or others only through positive reinforcement programming? What should happen to a dog if the positive reinforcement programming fails? Euthanize the dog, or suppress th...

    In my opinion...every dog is different and trying to show someone that just one way should or have to work for all dogs is bad idea completely. I agree with using all tools but no for all dogs. If someone have great results with just positive, so fine. But my dog didn't just positive great. But I don't feel okay to give my dog on e collar or training with prong collar. If others people feel good about it and it's positive effect on dog, so what is problem? I know dogs using e collar fine and I know dogs which were spoiled by using e collar. There play role multiple circumstances. Like a situation, mentality and temperament of dog and timing of using.

    I have been training IGP for over 30 years and this is the most intelligent method I have seen. I highly recommend the course to all IGP people, especially if you never really liked tracking that much. Obedience and protection are far more interesting for me, but with this method this might change in the future. Thank you, Ivan! We love it! 🙏 🙂

    It depends on the dog probably because some dogs are very sensitive to punishment. Doing that to a greyhound would cause more issues than good most likley. Belgian dogs aren't the same as others. I do think based on my reaserch that it is only a good idea with specific kinds of dogs and if done correctly. Ofcourse shocks can cause emotional stress long term if done the wrong way. There are many studies also showing the opposite of what you say, just because you disagree does not equal them to be entirely false. Victoria was being extreme, I see that.

    Some spooks, which obviously these working dogs are not in that category, can be damaged by having too high a level of shock, and improper use. If you confuse the dog, that's already spooky and nervous, due to poor genetics, yes you can harm the dog. This guy may not use one on those type of dogs. Also, the day would come that he would have to let some dogs out individually as I had to. I owned very large, very dangerous, very dominant male Rottweilers. You cannot have a little nip to let them sort it out. The males I had like Codo V Walkenbruckentor would not play with another male, even if I shocked him with a shock collar. In fact a shock collar would actually cause him to fight even more! I also owned a Belgian Sheepdog (Groenendale) who hated Rottweilers. After shocking him several times, and letting him play with a male dominant Rottweiler that I owned, which I did not attempt, I would not trust it at all! Any other behaviours, like breaking him from killing my cats, or chasing bikes, I did without e-colars. I only used a remote collar twice and bark colar twice in my 40 year career.

    I’m a dog walker and one of the owners use an e collar for their dog, I don’t really care cuz I don’t think they’re evil tools or anything. I do think like anything else u can use it wrong or abuse it, the dogs has changed so much in only a month and it’s a the point here I’m worried about her. I just feel like the owners are shocking the dog anytime they get irritated by barking or anything and it’s evident from the way the dog looks at the remote that it’s not a good thing.

    Thank you Ivan. If so-called trainers like "Victoria Stilwell" choose not to use ecollars in their training programs, great, but don't purposely set out to sabotage others with misinformation and negativity based on their own personal bias. At the end of your video, Victoria gets upset about the things she is saying are ridiculous yet here she is making a video about ecollars which are truly ridiculous. I'm all for advocating for the dog but doing so in a responsible way without throwing an exceptional tool under the bus.

    Shocked dogs are more stressed during training than non-shocked dogs

    • @LittleMissRaeRae69
      @LittleMissRaeRae69 2 года назад

      Absolutely! Dogs also have different thresholds for stress and pain, I have a staffordshire bull terrier who is unmoved by the use of the prong collar unless I actually put some shoulder into her corrections, and I have a German shepherd who would roll on his back and pee if you raise your voice at him, I wouldn’t dare put a prong on him. It’s all about the individual dog and understanding how to use a tool in an effective way that’s not harsh or abusive

    • @LittleMissRaeRae69
      @LittleMissRaeRae69 2 года назад

      And on a side note, because my gsd was an adult when I adopted him, he is an extremely persistent puller. However, that is not an excuse to put a prong collar on him. Instead, he has a harness with a d ring on his chest and my leash has a padded handle since the corrections require much more force than if he’s wearing a collar, and it’s extremely effective. He needs a reminder every now and then but it’s the right thing for him, seeing as how a prong collar is abuse if used on him at all because he’s too sensitive

    She is party right, IF we are talking about people who use a shock collar for the sole purpose of stopping barking without the training behind it. If a person thinks that the collar in and of itself will solve a problem without addressing the root reason for the barking, and uses it to silence it for no other reason than a bark is annoying... then it is a problematic device. Barking is a normal thing, it is communication and how a dog expresses a variety of things, and punishing a dog for being a dog because you lack the ability to teach commands and such is no more than abuse on a dog. As with most everything, it depends on the context of why it is being used, and by whom and their intent. Yes, barking is annoying, but if you do not train the dog with proper commands and such, and think this is the only way to stop the problem, it is pointless. Used as a training tool alongside the steps to get a dog to not bark, it can be a tool that works. But using one just to silence a dogs bark at any time, without knowing why the dog is barking.. that is a different case. No one is denying they dont have their place in the training world, but that there are people out there who use them as punishment for a normal behavior without addressing the reason for that beheavior.

    • @David_Downs
      @David_Downs 4 года назад

      She presents her point in a way to shame people for something, and she obviously takes it too far. But within certain contexts, she is correct IF she is only addressing the above concept of people who have no training experience, and rely on this device to correct the problem without knowing how to train an animal. Its also used by those people, and those people are who i think her animosity towards has some justification. If you can not train a dog to not bark with a simple quiet command, and just think this is your only hope and give it negative reinforcement for a normal behavior without understanding why that behavior is happening, you may as well just give up the animal to somebody who can do this.

  • @konukuauleki
    @konukuauleki 4 года назад

    She is very square minded and has an agenda for her tv show, she has to make things more dramatic, for the ratings, an ecollar is just a tool, could be used properly or could be used in an abusive way, but the abuser is the person not the tool. I've seen more people abuse a dog with a flat collar and leash, well, also with a choke collar. But i also thing not all the tools should be used by all the people, without the knowledge of how to use them properly.

    My four year old rescue working line german shepherd would still be a horror to walk if it wasn't for prong collars. She had no self control and would get far too excited by seeing a dog in the distance to the point where she would scare the other other dog before they got close and then it would be aggressive. Now I can confidently walk past other dogs knowing that most of the time my dog will listen to me and trust my judgment and that when she doesn't or can't i can regain control. She still has a long way to go but her levels of fear and reactivity have been massively reduced. I use praise and reward as much as I can but the truth is what a dog like this who's been abused in the past and has little experience of life it would be impossible through reward alone to keep her calm enough to walk without it being a constant fight. I just wish the people who write the laws in my area had experience of actually using e-collars on the dogs that need them. Because my trainers have all said that to have her properly off lead I will almost 100% need an e collar. Unfortunately putting an e-collar on my dog will now result in a $16,000 dollar fine and a year in jail because of Ideologues like victoria stillwell. I've been working engagement and recall with "positive" methods for months and if theres something shed rather smell or another dog she simply won't come. Sharp jerks on a long line with lots of praise and treats when she returns give some results but I have very little confidence i'll ever be able to have her off lead. My vet and all the staff at the vet constantly compliment me on how much calmer and happier she is and how well trained. They often ask me for tips on how to train their dogs. If the prong collar truly distressed her she would not be as confident as she is today.
